LW_kartoffelr+ªkkerne_0015     LW_kartoffelr+ªkkerne_0023 As with all lighting, there is good reason to carefully consider your choice of outdoor lamps. They have to withstand the ravages of weather, and fulfill a specific functional task, in terms of providing good illumination of the entrance. They are also your visitors’ first impression of the style and atmosphere you have set in the rest of the house.

Louis Poulsen has a number of great outdoor lights:

The PH 3-2 1/2 designed by Poul Henningsen is made from black lacquered steel and designed on the principle of a reflective three-shade system, which directs the majority of the light downwards. The shades have a matt painted interior surface diffusing the light in a comfortable way. It retails at £605.00.

The AJ Wall LED is designed by Arne Jacobsen and emits downward directed light. The shade is painted white on the inside to ensure a soft comfortable light. Made from Die Cast aluminium it retails at £649.00.

The NJP Work Light

NJP_STAY06Louis Poulsen launched the new Work Light as a result of a partnership with Japanese design company Nendo, and designer Oki Sato at Milan. But this new interpretation of the architect lamp is just as much at home in the bedroom as in the office.

Versatility and an intuitive understanding of how the lamp is used have been key themes in Oki Sato’s work. The head is shaped to make it easy to adjust the lamp and switch it on and off using one hand. The two arms provide great movement and many stepless positioning options.

One elegant detail is that the shade head is open at the rear, so that reflected light from the LED light source is utilised to illuminate the top section of the arm. A decorative – and practical – detail which allows the angle of the shade head in relation to the arm to be steplessly adjusted via a ball joint. The opening also improves the thermal conditions for the LED light source, thereby helping ensure a long lifetime.

NJP Table will be available in the stores in September. Available in black or white. The recommended retail price is £325.00

NJP Work Light

Nendo-produkt_27 sml croppedLouis Poulsen is launching a new interpretation of the architect lamp. The ultra-minimalist work lamp is the result of a new partnership with Japanese design company Nendo, and designer Oki Sato.

All the familiar details are present: the springs, the angled shade, the rotating head and the clamp for attaching it to the table. Yet everything is very different. NJP Table is a new interpretation of the classic architect lamp, with functional qualities that have helped make it the archetypal work lamp and extremely popular in workplaces and private homes. In Oki Sato’s lamp, the glare-free light distribution, flexibility and soft reflected light have been recreated in an ultra-minimalist Japanese design.

Nendo-produkt_01 smlFor Oki Sato, NJP Table is a personal lamp. It is intended to serve as a key element of an individual working area, and as he himself puts it: “It is my lamp”. The light is comfortable, and the angled shade offers the same intimacy that the original architect lamp created in the work environment. The lamp retains and reinterprets the old principles of allowing the functionality to be visible in a contemporary design. The springs are an elegant detail, openly and decoratively exposed in the arm joints.

Versatility and an intuitive understanding of how the lamp is used have been key themes in Oki Sato’s work. The head is shaped to make it easy to adjust the lamp and switch it on and off using one hand. The two arms provide great movement and many stepless positioning options, allowing even large tables to be optimally illuminated.

The way in which we organise our work and workstations today has been a key factor in the lamp design. For example, it has two light settings (100% and 50%), making it easy to adapt the light to alternating work with a monitor or documents. The lamp also offers the high degree of head adjustment flexibility demanded by today’s height-adjustable desks. The highly positioned LED light source minimises and virtually eliminates glare at any height.

Oki Sato produces honest designs with a simple expression, discarding decorative elements and only highlighting the functional elements in harmonic interplay in the final product. Its architect lamp heritage gives the light an extra dimension and adds signal value – NJP Table is primarily a work light.Nendo-produkt_hoved_04 sml

The lamp arms have two spring systems which ensure they can be steplessly adjusted to suit any work situation. The lamp’s simple functionalist design includes a groove in the arms in which the cord is visibly recessed. The arms’ design makes them appear light, as the eye is drawn to the flat top section, while the structure is reinforced using a triangular profile.

The lamp has several options for installation. It can be mounted in a traditional base with a bevelled edge, making the lamp appear to hover above the table. It is also available with a pin fitting, in two diameters, for direct attachment to the table top, and finally, with the classic table clamp.

With its ultra-minimalist design, the NJP Table work light is ideal for either solo or repetitive installations. Even in an open office environment the lamp has a discreet presence, and it interplays harmonically with the computer in a personal office.

NJP Table will be available for the project market spring 2015 and in the stores in September. Available in black or white. The recommended retail price is £325.00 incl VAT

PH Artichoke Goes Green

lp_5285  lp-interior-tifs-42

Poul Henningsen’s world-famous design icon, PH Artichoke, has now been made future-proof with a specially designed LED light source.

PH based his lighting philosophy on the incandescent bulb and its focal point. He designed his highly successful light fixtures around this light source with a minutious precision which made them known and admired around the world.

PH left nothing to chance, and the work of updating his designs to new requirements and technologies has therefore been challenging at times. The time has finally come to update his most prestigious design, PH Artichoke.

PH Artichoke illuminates both itself and the surrounding space. This requires high output from the light source, and LEDs have only recently been developed to a level sufficient to permit their use. The new 96W LED version of the fixture offers the same light output, comfort and atmosphere as the 500W incandescent bulb version.

We have designed a completely new light element for the LED version of PH Artichoke. In most models this is installed in the shade set in a way that allows replacement. Unlike earlier versions using energy-saving light sources, the LED version is dimmable. This detail help consolidate the PH Artichoke’s position as one of the most atmospheric light fixtures available.

PH Artichoke is one of the most renowned light fixtures in the world, and the LED version of this famous icon is a good illustration of how a clear focus on climate and energy consumption focus be consistent with an uncompromising attitude to aesthetics and light quality.

Limited edition Copper Table Lamp

ph-35-25-kobber-bord-int-02With Louis Poulsen’s successful re launch of Poul Henningsen’s design icons, another excellent lamp is being added to the collection. Between 14 March and 15 June a copper version of a legendary 1929 table lamp design can be ordered.

Warm materials are currently a must in interior design, and this table lamp is sure to add warmth and comfort to any interior. The lamp comes with two top shades – an opal glass shade, which together with the two bottom glass shades provides soft comfortable diffuse light, and a polished solid copper shade with a white painted inner surface, which provides softly concentrated downward directed light on the table surface.

Every home should have multiple points of light in each room.Too many homes have too few points of light, resulting in an uncomfortable light. With extra light points you create small oases and emphasise the room’s dimensions in a better and more atmospheric way. Table lamps are easy to move around, and provide pleasant low intensity lighting, creating still life scenes on side tables, bookcases or sideboards.

The PH 3½-2½ copper table lamp comes with a high gloss surface, but the copper will develop a patina unique to its given setting, adding further personality, if desired. Many people want their copper lamps to develop a patina and Louis Poulsen has therefore chosen not to surface treat or lacquer the copper on this and many of our other copper light fixtures. The patination process begins from the moment of assembly, and proceeds during production and distribution. When a product is taken out of the box, it may thus have already begun oxidising. We provide a set of white cotton gloves with each light fixture, so people can avoid leaving fingerprints during installation.

This limited edition can only be ordered during the three months indicated, giving people the opportunity to supplement their collection of unique PH fixtures. Those who have not yet started can also obtain a unique piece of Danish design history, which despite its age, will have a modern and atmospheric appearance for several generations. A version with a painted shade and a silk brown copper housing will be launched at a later date, supplementing the PH 3½-3 pendant launched in September 2014.

The PH 3½-2½ copper table lamp is 46 cm tall. A practical height providing good working light with either type of shade. The three-layer opal glass shades are polished on the outside and sandblasted on the inside. The switch is located on the cord.

PH 3½-2½ copper table lamps will be made in response to incoming orders, and only the exact number ordered will be produced.

Collage in Peaceful New Colours

    collage_aarhus_08 smaller

The well-known Collage pendant  is being released in a new version to celebrate 10 years since its launch.

The pendant  began attracting attention back in 2005 as soon as Louis Poulsen introduced it onto the world market in cooperation with the designer, Louise Campbell.

Ten years on, the Collage  now hangs in homes, institutions, universities, hospitals and numerous restaurants around the world.

Collage is being released in a new series of douche colours, and a new matt velour-like finish. These give Collage a completely new identity, and the fascinating shadow patterns formed by the three-layer shade set have an exclusive new and different look.

The Collage pendant is available in two sizes: Ø600 mm and Ø450 mm. The pendant’s simple expression makes it very versatile above dining tables and meeting tables, or as high general lighting. Collage is available in a flexible version with an E27 fitting, which fits the new LED bulbs. To further optimise lighting comfort, an anti-glare set can be purchased for the top and bottom as an optional extra. This diffuses the light directed upwards and downwards, and also inhibits direct views of the light source from all directions.

collage_aarhus_09 smaller

The new colours and surfaces will give any indoor environment a new identity and atmospheric lighting. Whether on or off, the new Collage light fixtures create beautiful focal points for gatherings of any size.

Louise Campbell’s inspiration from nature, translated into room lighting, has proven to be an enduring and valued design idea, which has made her name and the Collage light fixture known around the world. She has thereby proven herself to be among the key Danish designers, carrying on proud Danish design traditions in cooperation with Danish companies.

  • Collage 450 retails at £610 in white and £665 in colour
  • Collage 600 retails at £940 in white and £1050 in colour

The pendant will be available in UK shops in February

New bollard with award-winning simplicity

Louis Poulsen is launching a new bollard designed by Christian Flindt which demonstrates his great talent for seeing the potential in simple forms.

Yet Flindt also reminds us that the simple is not always so simple: the bollard’s minimalistic exterior hides its thought-out technical design, which optimises energy consumption, light distribution and ease of installation.

Development of the Flindt bollard began in 2011, flowing from the desire to create a new bollard for the park surrounding Brænderigården in Viborg, Denmark. The project was a joint initiative by designer Christian Flindt, Viborg municipality, Viborg Energiforsyning, Viborg Kunstmuseum, landscape architects and Louis Poulsen. The Flindt bollard has since been refined, including further optimised light distribution and energy consumption.

The result is so impressive that the Flindt bollard won the 2014 ELFORSK prize in June. Part of the explanation given was that ‘the jury was very impressed by the product’s thoughtful design in all areas – energy efficiency, light properties and a unique light experience, aesthetics and design, vandalism resistance, etc.’ (Danish Energy Association)

The Flindt bollard is fitted with two LED light sources (approx. 585 lumens) positioned at the top of the light aperture so as to emit both horizontal and vertical light. This placement and the light aperture design result in a lateral light distribution covering an angle of more than 180°. The fixture thereby illuminates itself, and contributes to the total light experience as a visual element.

Its extremely simple and functional design means the bollard can be used in almost any architectural context, and blends into natural settings in a peaceful and harmonic way. The organic light pattern, combined with its simple design, makes the bollard ideal for one-sided, zigzag and curved configurations. The facility to adjust the bollard +/-10° following installation ensures perfect light harmony between the fixtures.

New PH 3½-3 Pendant – More than an Icon

Ikast 11Ikast 28

To mark Poul Henningsen’s 120th birthday on 9 September, Louis Poulsen is launching the new PH 3½-3 pendant.

The PH 3½-3 pendant is based on Poul Henningsen’s original drawings from the late 1920s and early 1930s, featuring his renowned three-shade system.

The pendant has metal shades, available in green, yellow, red and white. The fixture housing is silk mat brown and made of copper. All colours are based on Poul Henningsen’s colour universe. Like the designer, the fixtures are colourful!

As an extra feature, all shades have a white painted rolled edge, accentuating the familiar profile of the three-shade fixture and creating beautiful optical symmetry.

The shades are pressed at Louis Poulsen’s factory in Vejen, by Louis Poulsen’s own staff – a craft only very few are trained in.

Although the fixture is over 80 years old, it is both modern and classic at the same time, making it ideally suited to a broad range of interior design environments. It is seen as a charming, rustic, functional and unpretentious fixture. But it is much more.

Ikast 35

The PH 3½-3 pendant is a piece of Danish lighting design history. It provides functional, decorative light, and gives any interior a boost simply by being there, whether lit or unlit. It is beautiful alone, or grouped with other fixtures.

Poul Henningsen’s design is timeless. A journalist recently went as far as to call his design immortal! Irrespective – we are confident that the PH 3½-3 pendant will continue to inspire a lot of interior design – even in 10, 20 or 30 years.

Poul Henningsen was called the light artist, to which he responded: “If you create art, you are an artist – good or bad. And illuminating a room is most certainly art!”

Poul Henningsen’s fixtures are being sold around the world today in large numbers – art or no art!

The PH 3½-3 pendant has metal shades, available in green, yellow, red or white, with white rolled edges. The fixture housing is silk mat brown, and made of copper. The shade holder and screws are made of copper plated brass, to ensure adequate strength. It comes with an E27 socket, allowing it to be used with LED, energy saving and halogen bulbs Max. 100W. The recommended retail price is £632 incl VAT.

Poul Henningsen’s 120th Birthday Celebrated in Style

LP_3.5-5_pendel_Eg+Ñ_-G_0002                  PH kobber interior UTH-G_02PH 3½-3 Copper

Poul Henningsen (PH), the social critic, review author, debate enthusiast and – most memorably – light designer, would have turned 120 on 9 September this year. To mark the occasion, his long-term partner Louis Poulsen is launching a limited edition of one of the first models in the famous PH System.

PH had an opinion about almost everything, and his propensity to argue his point often led him to being painted as both PH kobber interior UTH-G_01hero and villain of the piece. Most people agree, however, that with his lighting philosophy and trail-blazing light design, PH made an invaluable contribution to the creation of pleasant, convenient lighting systems. As early as the end of the 1920’s, PH had developed the formula for the distinctive lampshade profile that would become world-famous as System PH, and to which he remained true for the rest of his life. One of the first PH lights in the famous system was the PH 3-3 pendant from 1928. It was a model he created just before both he and Louis Poulsen achieved their popular breakthrough – and while his patent applications for System PH were still being processed by the authorities.

PH 3½ -3 is from 1929 and the special edition of PH 3½ -3 Louis Poulsen now launches, true to PH’s original drawings. For example, the glass sections are mounted in the original cast frame and likewise, the light housing has been reproduced down to the smallest detail, which means, for example, that the adjustment possibility of the height of the light source has been retained.

PH 3.5-3 Copper-2_26The shades on the limited edition are made of copper and glass. The two bottom shades are made of hand-blown, opal glass, while the top shade is made of untreated copper, which will take on a unique patina over time. The distinctive, rolled edge of the copper shade provides rigidity and a more robust appearance – a detail that can only be created by hand, and only by a select few craftsmen.

In fact, the pendant is packed with PH’s functional and well thought-out details, which make it both beautiful and interesting – both when illuminated and when switched off. The unique design is a unique part of design history, which has beautifully succeeded in preserving its aesthetic and functional relevance.

PH 3.5-3 Copper_12PH 3.5-3 Copper 02Louis Poulsen has previously issued limited editions of PH’s lights. All were remarkably well received, and often purchased as investments. However, as Pia Knudsen, Business Area Manager at Louis Poulsen, explains: “Lights are made to be used. We know that the re launch of the PH 3 ½-3 light is a dream come true for many PH collectors. At the same time, we are noticing a strong tendency to combine multiple periods in domestic design, with PH lights magnificently uniting classic and modern in this context.”

PH kobber interior EG+à-G_07

“As we see it, PH’s birthday is a perfect occasion to revisit the point where it all began for one of the most widely recognised light designers the world has ever seen. It has been a fascinating adventure to delve down into the treasure chest and see how a light from the end of the 1920’s can still produce absolutely beautiful light – even using modern LED light sources. Words such as ‘classic’ and ‘timeless’ take on a whole new meaning when you find yourself facing a design from the start of the last century and cannot help but admire the brilliance that went into its design and execution,” concludes Pia Knudsen.
