MASTERFUL FURNITURE AESTHETICS – New Wegner credenza enhances the versatility of the CH100 series

CH825_CH100_WideWegner’s CH825 credenza compliments the master’s CH100 series

To mark Hans J. Wegner’s 100th birthday, Carl Hansen & Son is focusing on his exclusive CH100 series. With its elegant, simple shapes and materials, the series epitomizes thoughtful design and unsurpassed craftsmanship. Originally launched as office furniture, the series has – particularly with the addition of the CH825 credenza – become far more versatile and fitting for a variety of settings.

Hans J. Wegner was a visionary whose designs were often ahead of their time. In 1970, he designed an exclusive furniture series that represents some of the finest steel work of his career. The series embodies the extremely simple cubic design that, along with timeless and exquisite comfort, has maintained its modern expression throughout the years.

The pieces were produced in small quantities throughout the 1970s, until Carl Hansen & Son relaunched the series with sofas, an armchair and coffee tables for the company’s 100th anniversary in 2008. Since then, a desk, two chairs and another armchair have been added to the series.

To mark Wegner’s 100th birthday, Carl Hansen & Son is relaunching an exclusive, elegant credenza Wegner created in 1958 – a design that shares elements with, and in many ways compliments, the CH100 series.

Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Son, says, “We decided to add Wegner’s CH100 series to our range because, with its subtle strength and the charisma that defines masterful design, it is very inviting. The series was originally launched to target modern offices and conference centers, but its design makes it suitable for other settings, from stylish home interiors to hotel lounges. The CH825 credenza elegantly compliments the series and makes it far more versatile.”

Wegner’s CH825 credenza is, thanks to its loop legs, closely related to the CH100 series. Originally one of a series of three credenzas launched in 1959, the CH825 is based on Wegner’s original drawings. Wegner later reinterpreted it in a variant intended to serve as storage furniture for the exclusive CH100 series. The credenza is designed with steel loop legs to match the other pieces in the series. All furniture in the series features simple surfaces made of luxurious materials like oak, walnut and leather, which exude calm and energy, while the loop legs in stainless steel lend the minimalist design a natural softness which is Wegner’s signature.

CH825 will be in stores from September 2014, with recommended retail prices starting at £4,589 (excl. VAT). Recommended retail prices for the CH100 series (all prices excl. VAT): CH101 armchair from £2,548, CH102 sofa from £4,057, CH103 sofa from £5,337, CH104 sofa from £8,961, CH106 coffee table £1,416, CH108 coffee table £1,698, CH110 desk from £6,369, CH111 chair from £2,043, CH112 armchair £1,386, CH113 chair £1,356.

New PH 3½-3 Pendant – More than an Icon

Ikast 11Ikast 28

To mark Poul Henningsen’s 120th birthday on 9 September, Louis Poulsen is launching the new PH 3½-3 pendant.

The PH 3½-3 pendant is based on Poul Henningsen’s original drawings from the late 1920s and early 1930s, featuring his renowned three-shade system.

The pendant has metal shades, available in green, yellow, red and white. The fixture housing is silk mat brown and made of copper. All colours are based on Poul Henningsen’s colour universe. Like the designer, the fixtures are colourful!

As an extra feature, all shades have a white painted rolled edge, accentuating the familiar profile of the three-shade fixture and creating beautiful optical symmetry.

The shades are pressed at Louis Poulsen’s factory in Vejen, by Louis Poulsen’s own staff – a craft only very few are trained in.

Although the fixture is over 80 years old, it is both modern and classic at the same time, making it ideally suited to a broad range of interior design environments. It is seen as a charming, rustic, functional and unpretentious fixture. But it is much more.

The PH 3½-3 pendant is a piece of Danish lighting design history. It provides functional, decorative light, and gives any interior a boost simply by being there, whether lit or unlit. It is beautiful alone, or grouped with other fixtures.

Poul Henningsen’s design is timeless. A journalist recently went as far as to call his design immortal! Irrespective – we are confident that the PH 3½-3 pendant will continue to inspire a lot of interior design – even in 10, 20 or 30 years.

Poul Henningsen was called the light artist, to which he responded: “If you create art, you are an artist – good or bad. And illuminating a room is most certainly art!”

Poul Henningsen’s fixtures are being sold around the world today in large numbers – art or no art!

The PH 3½-3 pendant has metal shades, available in green, yellow, red or white, with white rolled edges. The fixture housing is silk mat brown, and made of copper. The shade holder and screws are made of copper plated brass, to ensure adequate strength. It comes with an E27 socket, allowing it to be used with LED, energy saving and halogen bulbs Max. 100W. The recommended retail price is £632 incl VAT.

Energy class: A+ – E

Available in stores from October 2014.

If you prefer a more neutral tone the design also comes in a softer, less shouty putty-colour and dove grey which, while still playful, forms a neutral foil for other colours.

How Holly&Lil came to be at the National Portrait Gallery

h&l met gallery

Holly&Lil’s Pirate Harness is one of their most popular products and now it can be viewed by thousands at the National Portrait Gallery – here is how.

Henrietta called to buy her puglet Ollie a new UK harness and at the same time told us her wonderful news – both she and her Hubby, Tim Hall, are artists and have been included in the BP portrait award list that will be exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery exhibition. 26th June to 21st September.

This is Tim’s painting and Ollie is featured in his Pirate harness.

Then we spoke and she explained she has spent years painting the great chefs of the World; (at the moment she is working on a portrait of René Redzepi of Noma in Copenhagen – repeatedly voted the best restaurant in the world. That is who Tim shows her painting on her easel).

Henrietta’s 7ft painting of James Martin also made the list; it’s the first time a husband and wife have both made the list in the 25 years of the competition.

Congratulations to Henrietta and Tim – we can’t wait to see the painting at the Gallery.

THE MARVELOUS METROPOLITAN – World-Class Design and Craftsmanship

LM92_Foldingtable_Walnut_Cognac The Metropolitan Chair earned its name  when The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York purchased the chair in 1961.

On the international design scene, the duo Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen are far less known than designers like Hans J. Wegner. But upon closer inspection of their major work – the Metropolitan Chair – one begins to understand their intuitive sense for world-class design and craftsmanship.

Carl Hansen & Son is relaunching the Metropolitan Chair, which Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen first presented at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Furniture Exhibition in 1949, a few years after joining forces. The Metropolitan Chair is now available with solid oak or walnut legs and a saddle leather seat and backrest in natural, cognac or black.

Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Son, says: “The Metropolitan Chair is a valuable Danish furniture classic that will undoubtedly do well with a diverse, international audience. Along with the rest of our range, the chair tells the story of Danish design at its best. The addition of the Metropolitan Chair to our portfolio brings us significantly closer to our vision of gathering the greatest furniture icons, with emphasis on high quality and traditions of craftsmanship, under one roof.”

Larsen and Bender Madsen, who trained as furniture upholsterer and cabinetmaker, respectively, met while studying under leading Danish designer Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Together they designed approximately 300 works, of which the Metropolitan Chair is considered their most significant.

Originally intended as a conference chair, the Metropolitan Chair went into production in 1950. The design is the result of many intense hours where Larsen and Bender Madsen designed and developed late into the night. The tensioned veneer back was inspired by a lamination technique course Bender Madsen had taken earlier.

After a 1961 Danish export campaign, the Metropolitan Museum in New York purchased the chair for its exhibition, The Arts of Denmark. The chair was consequently named the Metropolitan Chair – probably one of the greatest honours a chair can earn. Chase Manhattan Bank also expressed an interest in purchasing 450 of the chairs for their new head office.

The chair was previously made primarily of teak, oak, and occasionally cherry wood. A decade after the original version was unveiled; it was supplemented with a saddle leather seat and backrest. The chair is distinguished by its impressive saddle leather upholstery and excellent seating comfort.

The Metropolitan Chair (product code LM92) is available in oak and walnut with various surface treatments and saddle leather upholstery in natural, cognac or black. The chair’s dimensions are 42.5 cm (seat height), 79.5 cm (height), 56 cm (depth) and 77.5 cm (width). The Metropolitan Chair will be in stores from September 2014, with recommended retail prices starting at £1,972 (excl. VAT).
