Wegner one-of-a-kind chair – 55 years old and still as relevant

Carl Hansen & Son are recreating the 55-year-old Hans J. Wegner wooden chair with organic contours. Known as “CH33”, the chair pays tribute to honest design and the use of natural materials in a contemporary take on the original. CH33 is the epitome of high quality and timeless design.

Hans J. Wegner designed the 55-year-old CH33 chair manufactured by Carl Hansen & Son.
The Danish furniture manufacturer Carl Hansen & Son is recreating the CH33 chair, designed in 1957 by Hans J. Wegner. In production until around 1967, the chair has since lived on as an iconic auction item.

This organic chair with its curved back and seat boasts inviting contours and harmonious lines for the ultimate in seating comfort – one of the Wegner hallmarks. With more than 400 chair designs to his name, he is justifiably known as the “master of the chair”.

“With CH33, Hans J. Wegner proves yet again that great design is timeless.  This chair was conceived 55 years ago, and is just as relevant now as it was then. Aside from its design features, the chair’s construction and the craftsmanship that goes into making it assure its appeal for generations to come,“ says Knud Erik Hansen, 3rd generation owner of Carl Hansen & Son.The chair’s clear references to the clean lines of the 50s and 60s and the use of wood blend in perfectly with contemporary interior design trends that hark back to a simplicity and familiarity. In this sense, wood lends a warmth and sensuality to the contours through its structure and originality.

Carl Hansen & Son have reinterpreted the chair, dressing it in new colours from the original Wegner palette – white, grey, pale blue, orange and black – for a new take on the original look, while retaining the 1950s design in pure wood versions.

CH33 is available in birch or oak or combinations of both in either soap or oil treatments or varnished finish and is priced from £349, excl. VAT. The chair is available with or without upholstery. Upholstery is available in fabric or leather. The chair’s seat height is 44 cm, the height is 74 cm and the width is 55 cm.

The many variants mean that the chair is equally well suited to a dining room or kitchen at home, a hotel restaurant or company canteen. CH33 will be available from selected retailers from March 2012.
