Icons of Denmark Teams up with VERPAN

And appoints Gertsen PR to handle the publicity

VERPAN produces lamps, furniture and textiles designed by Verner Panton – in accordance with Panton’s original drawings and in cooperation with the Panton estate

VERPAN is re-introducing four Panton designs that were made in small quantities a long time ago, but never  launched commercially: a modular sofa, a flexible wall sculpture system, an interlocking seating and side table solution, and a table for dining or work. These new pieces show why Panton has won that reputation. But they also show another side, the pragmatic architect who was all about modularity and simple systems that just work. The combination is pure Panton – and pure genius.”

Jesper Møllgaard Jensen owner of Icons of Denmark explained, “We are delighted to have VERPAN on board. And having worked with Gertsen PR for almost 3 years on other account, we are pleased to appoint them to handle the account for VERPAN as well”.

Two masters united at Carl Hansen & Son

Carl Hansen & Son now represents another great Danish design luminary, Mogens Koch, whose pieces complement the work of Hans J. Wegner beautifully. Mogens Koch is best known for his iconic Shelving System, which has enjoyed international acclaim for 80 years.

Mogens Koch’s Shelving System, a modern icon.

Two of Denmark’s greatest furniture designers – Hans J. Wegner and Mogens Koch – were brought together under one roof last year when Carl Hansen & Son acquired the prestigious furniture workshop Rud. Rasmussen. The alliance broadens Carl Hansen & Son’s portfolio of top Danish handcrafted furniture designs.

Koch’s and Wegner’s pieces complement each other exceedingly well and are, by virtue of their simple  idiom and choice of materials, natural extensions of each other,” says Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Son. “We are proud to be able to bring the two masters together, and especially to show the world the elegant aesthetics that are also characteristic of Mogens Koch’s work.”

Mogens Koch, an architect, is renowned for his Folding Furniture and his legendary Shelving System, which has become an icon for design lovers all over the world. When he  sketched out the Shelving System in 1928, he created a concept that would spawn countless reproductions far beyond Denmark’s borders. Rud. Rasmussen developed the first prototype in 1930, and production commenced in 1932. Today – 80 years later – the Mogens Koch Shelving System is still exclusively manufactured by the joinery workshop Rud. Rasmussens Snedkerier A/S in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The system of quadratic bookcases is exceptionally flexible and features an extensive range of modular elements. The basic six-section unit  can be organised so that the sections are either short or tall depending on  their contents – an ingenious construction in its own right. Its beautiful dovetail and rabbet joints are characteristic features of both design and craftsmanship and give the individual units strength and stability.

Mogens Koch’s designs are few, but all are significant, pioneering, original, and at times daring. His furniture offers some of the most elegant and essential solutions to the requirements of comfort, functionality and aesthetics. Mogens Koch’s own life had a significant impact on the furniture pieces he designed over the years, and the Shelving System is no exception: he initially designed it for his own home, which had small rooms that required flexible shelving solutions.

The Shelving System is available in oak and ash with either soap or oil/white oil finishes. These versions will be in shops from September 2012. Other versions of the Shelving System are still marketed by Rud. Rasmussen Snedkerier A/S, Nørrebrogade 45, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Recommended retail price from £659, excluding VAT.

New bright ideas from Louise Campbell

Louis Poulsen has again teamed up with Danish/English designer Louise Campbell to produce a lamp, LC Shutters, the fourth she has designed for LP – and again it reflects innovative thinking.

Louise Campbell’s creative side develops in step with the challenges, and this time she challenged both herself and Louis Poulsen. It is said that simplicity is difficult, and that has certainly been the case here. Her idea with the new lamp was to create a pendant with a minimum of processes, based on a single shade. The process has literally been cut down to three basic elements: turning the shade, stamping the pattern, and painting.

LC Shutters is very harmonious light. It is available in two versions – a completely white edition, and one with a pattern of various colours which helps create a completely different expression, when the light is on or off.

LC Shutters not only protects against glare, it is 100% glare-free, and the light source is protected by a diffuser which shields direct viewing and also prevents it from being touched. The diffuser can be easily removed and cleaned – yet another factor which makes the pendant very maintenance friendly, both in the home and the workplace.

LC Shutters is a lamp which can be used in a wide range of settings. Many want to put it above their dining table at home. A logical choice, but the light has an amazing ability to blend into its surroundings in a natural way. Louis Poulsen often tests lamps in various settings and LC Shutters demonstrated a remarkable ability to add a decorative and tasteful softness to its surroundings, helping to make rooms more human and communicative. LC Shutters produces honest lighting. A soft and diffuse light which provides ideal illumination for faces, without distracting shadows so it ideal for meeting rooms, where communication should have the best possible conditions.

Louis Poulsen excels at developing and producing very precise, identical metal shades. These skills hail from the days of Poul Henningsen, and the ongoing production of his lights keeps them sharp as a daily discipline at the factory in Vejen, Denmark.

All Louise Campbell’s lamps have multiple layers, and this one is no exception. However, the extra layer is created in the same shade, and this was the crux of the challenge. A completely new tool was necessary – a tool which can stamp with millimetre precision, on a curved surface.

Louise Campbell said about her new light: “I aimed to draw attention to the balance between glare reduction and spreading the light in the room. The shade and diffuser are integrated. A single unit with a clear function – protecting against glare, creating atmosphere, but also diligently spreading the light. Despite the dense, hard material, the design expression is soft and friendly.”

DANISH ROYAL COUPLE ATTENDS OPENING OF SHOWROOM IN NEW YORK

 - Carl Hansen & Son invests heavily in the US market

Driven by major progress in Europe, Carl Hansen & Son, a Danish-owned furniture manufacturer, is turning its sights on success in the US market and opening an exclusive showroom in New York. The Danish Crown Prince and Princess were among the first guests at the official opening, at this world-class Danish design store.

Carl Hansen & Son, a Danish-owned manufacturer of designer furniture, has just officially opened its new 6000 sq. ft. showroom in SoHo, New York, an occasion presided over by HRH Crown Prince Frederik and HRH Crown Princess Mary. Launching the new showroom was also part of the official export drive where exponents of the best in Danish design were represented.

By establishing a showroom and sales organization in New York, Carl Hansen & Son is significantly stepping up its commitment to the US market. “The US has always interested us and was actually one of our first export markets way back in the 1950s. After years of success and significant growth rates in the European market, we have chosen to invest heavily in our US activities to realise the huge potential and growth opportunities in the North American market. Establishing our new showroom is therefore only the first step in building up our organization in the USA,” explains Knud Erik Hansen, CEO.

Carl Hansen & Son’s strategy for the US market is to target its activities towards architects and professional buyers. Establishing a showroom is therefore a vital factor in showcasing our range for this target group. The company has achieved this successfully in Copenhagen, Denmark, where an impressive showroom was recently opened in a large industrial-style complex in a thriving new design district.

“We can see that Americans are appreciating elegant and simple designs more and more. A prime example is world-famous Danish architect Hans J. Wegner with his legendary Wishbone Chair,” says Thomas Vagner, President, Americas, adding: “We take American consumers seriously which is why we want to meet their need for shorter delivery times and greater flexibility.”

Carl Hansen & Son’s products are sold all over the world through a network of sales subsidiaries in Canada, Japan, China and now the USA as well as through its own sales representations in Hong Kong, the UK, Germany, Norway and Sweden in addition to local agencies. Knud Erik Hansen concludes: “We are expecting a great deal from this initiative and are looking forward to writing a whole new chapter in the multi-faceted story of this century-old, family-run company spanning several generations.”
