Frits Henningsen’s Heritage Chair is available with fabric or leather upholstery.
When it came to developing and producing his furniture, Frits Henningsen was known to be a true perfectionist. Nowhere is this more evident than in the design of his 1930 Heritage Chair, which is now being resurrected with Carl Hansen & Son as the manufacturer. The chair’s soft lines and organic shapes are characteristic of Frits Henningsen’s unique appreciation of both form and function.
After traveling for a number of years, Frits Henningsen returned to Denmark filled with impressions from his experiences around Europe. In 1930, he created one of his most iconic furniture designs, a sculptural wing chair, which is now being re-launched as the Heritage Chair. Drawing on classic British style, Frits Henningsen sought to develop a contemporary armchair with a high level of detail and quality.
The Heritage Chair’s warm and elegant lines bear testimony to Frits Henningsen’s constant pursuit of perfection. The re-launch also demonstrates that his furniture pieces are still extremely relevant today – and have a radiance rarely found in modern furniture. With a love for natural materials, Frits Henningsen created a chair that is inviting and evokes tranquillity, fulfilling the eternal human quest for breathing space in a hectic daily life.
The chair – a long overlooked piece of Frits Henningsen’s design heritage – represents a design philosophy that uncompromisingly pays homage to good craftsmanship and creates quality through functional design. “In order to create an authentic piece of furniture in his spirit, it was important that his high demands and standards be fulfilled down to the smallest detail,” explains Frits Henningsen’s daughter, Habba Egefeldt. “I have followed the recreation of my father’s lovely chair with excitement, and am very pleased with the details, which are fully in line with the original chair and my father’s legacy. Both the materials and processes follow the original instructions. My father would have been happy with the result.”
This is not the first time Carl Hansen & Son has been entrusted with producing an original Frits Henningsen furniture piece. In the early 1930s, Frits Henningsen and Carl Hansen developed a close collaborative partnership that resulted in the legendary Windsor Chair, which was in production for 70 years and highly successful.
Knud Erik Hansen, Carl Hansen & Son’s CEO and the third generation at the helm of the company, is very pleased that Carl Hansen & Son has this opportunity to re-launch one of Frits Henningsen’s treasures. “It’s touching that the furniture magic that the first generation of Carl Hansen & Son helped produce can now be resurrected in this initiative to recreate the Heritage Chair,” says Hansen. Frits Henningsen was known for setting extremely strict demands, and it is a great pleasure for the cabinet makers at Carl Hansen & Son to produce yet another unique chair based on his instructions. We are proud to add this unique piece of Danish design to our range, where it will undoubtedly take its natural place among designs from other Danish furniture masters. With its broad appeal, I am confident it will find an international audience.”
The Heritage Chair comes with an upholstered seat and back made from a variety of fabrics or leather, and oak or walnut legs. The chair has a seat height of 41 cm, and is 102 cm high, 96 cm deep and 76 cm wide. Recommended retail prices start from £2,701. A matching footrest is also available.
